How To Choose The Perfect Outfit For A Fall or Winter Photoshoot

Happy September! Time to bust out your booties and those pumpkin scented candles. The holidays are quickly approaching, and that means it’s time for photoshoots! Whether you’re taking family photos for holiday cards or having a photoshoot with your closest girlfriends, you’ll want to look and feel your absolute best. Here’s a few tips and tricks for picking the right outfit for your Fall/Winter photoshoot:

Wear rich Fall colors: Stick with the Fall/Winter theme and choose rich colors like burgundy, olive, and mustard. If your skin tone isn’t suited for Fall colors, neutrals like cream, grey, and khaki will photograph beautifully. Stay away from dark colors like black as they may wash you out in photos or make your pictures look too dark.

Consider the location: The backdrop of your photos is so important, and should definitely be considered when you’re planning your outfit. Are you taking photos at the beach? Soft pieces that can flow in the breeze look gorgeous in photos. Try a burgundy colored maxi dress with a denim jacket and booties. Taking photos with a mountain backdrop? Dark skinny jeans paired with a cozy sweater and knee-high boots will look amazing and go with the theme.

Layer, layer, layer: When you think of Fall and Winter, you think cozy and warm. To have this message come through in your photos, use soft layers like cardigans, classic denim jackets, or even a moto jacket for some edge. Stay away from heavy jackets that look bulky or weather-specific pieces like raincoats. A scarf is another layer that can add a subtle pop of print or color to your neutral outfit. Just make sure it complements the colors you’re already wearing!

Comfort is key: The last thing you want to be is uncomfortable at your photoshoot. This always shows in your photos, and you don’t want to look hunched over or like you can’t sit right in a too-tight outfit. Choose an outfit that not only looks amazing, but makes you feel amazing! Wear something that you’d normally be seen in, not something totally different than your everyday style that you’re not comfortable in. A tried-and-true outfit that’s always comfortable is pairing your favorite pair of jeans with a warm sweater. Add booties and earrings and you’re ready for the camera!

Add accessories: You want to look put together in your photos, and the right accessories do just that. Try front tucking your sweater or top into your jeans to show off a belt, add gold hoops for a delicate touch, or throw on a wide brim fedora for a super stylish topper that’s perfect for the season. Just don’t go overboard and layer too much. For photoshoots, remember simple photographs well.
